One of the most bizarre and still-existing cults today is the Aum Shinrikyo (now known as Aleph). It was founded in Japan in the 1980s by Shoko Asahara, originally as a yoga and meditation group.
Over time, Asahara’s teachings became increasingly apocalyptic, blending elements of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christianity with conspiracy theories and a belief in an impending world war.
